Title Tags

The most important HTML tag as all the search engines consider it an important element in their ranking system. Hence a web-page with a keyword in the title tag will rank higher then one with it in the body of the page only.

It is generally used as the title of your page in the search results, which means that this is the first thing a user will see of your page - if it doesn't do anything for them it will be ignored and passed over for another page in the search results.

Description Tag

This is generally displayed to the user in the search results.  Hence a good description is more compelling to a user and will  generate more interest.

  • Solve something quickly and cheaply

<definitions>

Keyword Tag

<definitions>

Copyright Tag

Highlights and documents the copyright status of part or all of the web page.   Although it won't stop anyone lifting it, it will notify those that do in a legitimate manner that doing so infringes your conditions of use.  Most common use is to document its status and owner (company/organisation etc).  A sample text can be inserted for your convenience.

Author Tag

Documents the creative genius behind the web page.  At its simplest - your name so that everyone can see you for what you are!  Also add your email address or other details if you wish to be contacted.

  • GENERAL
  • ADULT
  • CONFIDENTIAL
  • RESTRICTED
  • 14 YEARS
  • FAMILY

Useful mechanism for Search Engines to determine the level of access appropriate for the associated web page.  However this is more often used in restricted environments of a company Intranet rather then the WWW Internet.  The advantage is that search mechanisms and network maintenance activities can be designed to serve the chosen ratings.

Reply-To Tag

If you require to make your contact details know in the web page code (which is indexed by some specialist Search Engines) this is the place to put them.  Coupled with the Copyright Tag this gives a complete set of information about the author, useful if a statement such as "...without prior permission from the author" is set down in the Copyright Meta Tag.

<definitions>

Comments Tag

General area for author comments about the site.  Some major Search Engines take this Tag and use it in their Keyword Weighting algorythms.  See-Tip:  make use of it and include your primary keywords in it.

<definitions>

Refresh Tag

The ability to send the user to another address of your choosing.  Especially useful when page have moved and you want to keep any established linking from yourself or others.  Clicking on a page with this code will forward the user to another page after the amount of specified seconds.  A bit like a hyperlink but automatic.

See-Tip:  Careful consideration must be made for Search Engines and other indexing Spider programmess.  If these visit your Web page they will throw a fit if it suddenly changes to another page during an indexing operation.  It is therefore recommended that the minimum setting for a redirect should be 8 seconds - but safer would be 10 seconds.  For usability and cross browser compatability, always provide the user with a text link to the forwarding address for older browsers that do no support 'Refresh'.

NOTE:  IE only

Page Transition Effects

Page Transition effects can add spice and zest to a web page by using the boxing-in or dissolve effect to give it a "techy" feel.  Bringing MS Powerpoint Slide Show effects to the web can be easy with the Page Transistion Generator below.

See-Tip:  Always consider the user when they press the browser's back button and have to wait for the transition to occur before they can read your page. In an impatient world this can quickly become an irritant.  These Page Transitions will only work for IE 4.0 and above, and only when moving from one page to the next.
